Lime Street (The Willis Building)

Establishing new practices for environmentally-friendly high-rise construction

This 29-storey office development is the home of global insurance broker Willis Group, and encompasses workspace, a wellness centre, and terraces, creating a modern hub for up to 3,000 workers.
The scheme enabled the creation of a large, tree-lined public plaza, filled with cafes and restaurants, changing the feel of the area. The building also surpassed targets for providing an ecological build, using sustainably-sourced wood and green walls to create an energy-efficient building. The work also saw the reopening of a historic route closed off since the 1700s, and the pedestrianisation of Lime Street.
The building was awarded the Considerate Contractors Scheme: Gold Award in 2005 and the Worshipful Company of Chartered Architects’ Finest Example of New Architecture Contributing to the Streetscape of the City of London award in 2007.
This project was undertaken with partners including Whitbybird, Mace, and Expanded.
