Stanhope promoted a major masterplan to create a new metropolitan centre for London. The Stratford City masterplan as originally prepared, was a regeneration project of 4 million sq ft and when submitted was one of the largest planning applications submitted in London since the second World War.

Following the grant of outline planning permission in 2004, London was chosen to host the 2012 Olympics. The original masterplan has remained largely intact throughout planning for the Olympics and is a testament to the robustness of the plan.
