Ground-breaking environmental features will make this Europe's most energy efficient broadcasting facility

As Europe's first carbon neutral media organisation, BSkyB requires a campus that not only provides space and flexibility for growth and changing technology but also demonstrates its commitment to sustainability.

The building, which will be the new home of Sky Sports and Sky entertainment channels, includes a range of innovative features to reduce its environmental impact.

Natural ventilation systems - a global first for television studios - will draw fresh air in to cool the building, while a series of chimneys simultaneously draw waste heat out, reducing overall energy usage by 7.5%.

Wind turbines are planned, subject to further planning permission, to provide 90% of the energy needed for office lighting.

Onsite renewable energy will be generated by a biomass-fuelled combined cooling and heating (CCHP) power plant, reducing the building's carbon footprint by at least 20 percent, while rainwater will be harvested to irrigate green spaces and to flush all the toilets in the building.

The project is expected to achieve BREEAM "Excellent" standard.

The new building, which is currently under construction, will house eight studios, production space and offices.

Opinions

“As well as the greenest, this will be the most technologically advanced broadcast facility of its kind in the UK. This project is set to completely change both the way we work and the scope of the content we deliver.”
